As a medical coder, you must be trained to understand and interpret written descriptions of diseases and injuries and then translate them into healthcare codes. You will be trained to use specific code numbers to describe the diagnoses and what procedures the doctor performed. This is essential for accuracy in medical record keeping. Your accuracy will positively or negatively affect all account processing tasks, as well as client revenue.

Many medical coding jobs allow you to work virtually from home. All necessary data is transmitted securely to a software application on your computer. Using this software (provided by the employer or medical facility), you perform medical coding. You will need basic knowledge of Procedural Coding (CPT), Diagnostic Coding (ICD-9-CM), and Special Coding (HCPS-Level II), and a knowledge of medical terminology.

The average pay rate is between $10 and $25 per hour. You can earn more if you have specialized medical coding skills.
